Description

The KORG DS-DAC-10R is a 1-bit USB DAC that plays DSD and PCM files natively through its RCA line outputs and a front-panel 6.3mm headphone jack. It is also a recording interface: connect a turntable to the built-in phono input, or a line-level source such as a cassette deck to the line input, and record to your computer in DSD (5.6MHz or 2.8MHz) or PCM (up to 192kHz/24-bit).

Native DSD and PCM Playback

DSD files play natively at 2.8224MHz and 5.6448MHz, and PCM plays at 44.1kHz to 192kHz (16/24-bit). The DA converter is a Cirrus Logic CS4398. The unit is rated at 105dB S/N ratio (typical, 20Hz to 20kHz, IHF-A) and 0.005% THD+N (typical, 20Hz to 20kHz).

Headphone and Line Outputs

The front-panel 6.3mm stereo headphone jack delivers up to 70mW + 70mW into 32 ohms and accepts loads of 16 ohms or more. A pair of RCA unbalanced line outputs connects the unit to an amplifier or powered speakers.

Record Vinyl and Line Sources in DSD

The phono input accepts a turntable directly and has a ground terminal. The line input takes line-level sources such as cassette decks. Recording is handled on your computer with KORG's AudioGate 4 software, which also controls the input selection (switched by relays inside the unit).

The AD converter is a Texas Instruments PCM4202, the same chip used in KORG's MR-2000S recorder. The phono preamp uses a Texas Instruments OPA1662.

DSD Phono Equalizer

A phono equalizer is built into AudioGate 4. It supports the RIAA curve plus five other playback curves, and the equalization can be applied at the time of recording or after recording.

Build and Operation

The die-cast body keeps the front panel minimal, with only a headphone jack and a volume knob. An LED ring on the volume knob shows the sample rate and the recording status. The unit is powered over USB (5V, 500mA), so no AC adapter is needed.

With the iAudioGate app, an Apple connection kit and a powered USB hub, it can also be used with an iPhone. The iAudioGate app does not include the phono equalizer.
